The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) is a global coalition of national and sub-national governments, businesses and organisations working to advance the transition away from unabated coal power generation.
Together, the Alliance advocates that shifting away from coal power generation is essential for clean air, healthy communities, sustainable economic growth, and a safe climate. A timely transition is necessary to meet the international climate change commitment to keep global temperature increases well below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.
Since its launch in November 2017, the PPCA has now grown to 137 members and sees increasing demands on it to support knowledge exchange and international cooperation. The second half of 2021 sees the PPCA aiming to further intensify its efforts in support of the UK Presidency of COP26 goal of ‘consigning coal to history’. Furthermore, the PPCA is already looking further ahead at how COP26 can provide a springboard for further actions to accelerate the transition from coal to clean energy in 2022, channelling momentum into diplomatic processes including Germany’s Presidency of the G7.
The PPCA Secretariat is the vehicle for providing dedicated capacity to support the Alliance and its members, working directly with its co-chairs, Canada and the United Kingdom. The PPCA Secretariat team operates as a dedicated unit co-hosted by think tanks E3G and the Pembina Institute, who additionally provide expert analysis, advice, and administration in support of the Secretariat, co-chairs, and Alliance members.
The Alliance is recruiting a Communications Officer who will support communication activities around the UNFCCC 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26), which will be held in Glasgow, UK in November 2021, as well as endeavours and engagement post-COP and into 2022. The position is offered as a 12-month fixed term contract, ideally starting in October. We offer a competitive a salary, depending on experience and location (£34,500 - £43,500 for locations in the UK or equivalent outside of the UK).
