Electricity Grid Transition from Coal to Clean

This PPCA Summit session brought together policymakers, grid operators, regulators and utilities to discuss best practices and collaborate on solutions for transitioning from coal-reliant grids to clean, reliable and cost-effective grids.

Context

The growing number of jurisdictions committing to a coal phase out illustrate how climate urgency and the challenging economics of coal make a compelling case for an accelerated coal exit. This does, however, entail a transformation of the electricity sector – from one dominated by centralized fossil fuel generation to a flexible system with diverse generation sources.  It provides both challenges and opportunities for innovation.

Session Description

This session is for policy makers who are concerned about the provision of reliable and cost-effective power as the grid transitions, and for grid operators, regulators and utilities who are working on technical and regulatory solutions to address such concerns. It examined best practices in:

  • Infrastructure and generation asset investments
  • Clean energy technology integration
  • Grid operation
  • Regulatory and market design

During the session we heard from a few different regions and organizations that are at various stages of grid/asset transition. Participants were invited to ask questions, and share their experiences, challenges and lessons learnt in transitioning a grid from coal to clean.
